Crypto card for AWS and cloud hosting: what providers accept

Check the provider first. AWS does not accept virtual credit cards, Google Cloud and DigitalOcean exclude prepaid cards, so an ExCards card is likely to be refused there. Hetzner lists Visa and Mastercard without such a restriction. Where the card is not excluded, Visa E-commerce usually fits a small monthly bill: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee.

What cloud providers say about virtual and prepaid cards

Cloud and hosting providers are stricter about cards than subscription services, because they bill after you use resources. Before choosing a card, check what your provider states. We read the official help pages on 10.10.2026; we have not made test payments to any of them.

ProviderWhat the help center saysWhat it means for an ExCards card
AWSVirtual credit cards, gift cards and PayPal are not accepted; prepaid cards only from listed issuers, and AWS advises against themHigh risk of refusal; a failed payment can lead to account suspension
Google CloudPrepaid cards are not accepted; debit cards that require two-factor authentication are not acceptedHigh risk of refusal: every ExCards payment goes through 3D Secure
DigitalOceanVirtual, Electron and prepaid cards are not acceptedExpect a refusal
HetznerVisa, Mastercard, AMEX and UnionPay; wallets such as Apple Pay are not accepted; nothing about virtual or prepaid cardsNo explicit restriction on virtual cards; add the card number directly, not through Apple Pay

So the honest answer: among these four, only Hetzner's help center does not rule out a card like ours. If your workload must not stop, keep a payment method the provider explicitly accepts.

Which ExCards card fits a hosting bill

If your provider does not rule out the card, the choice depends on the size of the monthly bill and the small verification hold when you add the card.

A small VPS or a few services: Visa E-commerce. A monthly bill from $1 costs only the 3D Secure check, and a verification hold under $1 costs $0.10.

A larger, steady bill: Visa Universe. The top-up fee is 2% against 3.5%, which outweighs the flat $0.50 on one monthly charge.

A company account: Mastercard Business, if you also need offline payments and higher limits for other company spending.

None of this guarantees that a payment is approved. The provider's checks and card processing decide on each charge.

How to pay for hosting, step by step

  1. Check the provider first. Read its payment page (links above). If it excludes virtual or prepaid cards, choose another payment method there.
  2. Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
  3. Top up with any crypto. This is a separate step after the card is issued: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the top-up fee of your card is taken from each top-up. Keep at least one monthly bill plus a margin on the card.
  4. Add the card and confirm. Enter the card number, expiry date, CVC and the address you actually live at in the provider's billing settings: Payment preferences in the AWS Billing console, the Payment method page in the Google Cloud console, Payment methods on the DigitalOcean Billing page. If a 3D Secure window opens, complete it right away.

Common declines and what to do

What you seeLikely reasonWhat to do
AWS sign-up stops at card verificationAWS does not accept virtual credit cards, or the balance is below the 1.00 USD holdDo not retry many times; if a top-up does not help, use a payment method AWS accepts
Google Cloud or DigitalOcean refuses the cardTheir help centers exclude prepaid cards (and, at DigitalOcean, virtual cards)Use another payment method the provider lists
Card refused when you add it at HetznerToo little on the balance for the check, or you used Apple Pay instead of the card numberTop up with a margin and enter the card details directly
Hetzner emails that the automatic charge failedThe balance ran out before the invoice was chargedTop up and retry the payment in your account; Hetzner allows up to five attempts
Payment stuck, then declinedThe 3D Secure check was not finished or timed outRetry and complete the confirmation without closing the window
Monthly bill larger than expectedUsage-based billing grew with traffic or resourcesSet budget alerts at the provider and keep more than one bill on the card

Do not press "pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. If the provider bills in a currency other than USD, the issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where cards are available at all is on the geo restrictions page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay for AWS with a virtual crypto card?

AWS says virtual credit cards are not accepted, and prepaid cards only from listed issuers, with a recommendation not to use them. So an ExCards card is likely to be refused by AWS, and we do not recommend relying on it for a production account. Use a payment method AWS lists as accepted.

Why does AWS charge 1 dollar when I add a card?

It is a temporary 1.00 USD authorization that checks the card is valid. AWS does not keep it; it usually disappears within three to five business days. For prepaid cards the amount may differ.

Do Google Cloud and DigitalOcean accept prepaid or virtual cards?

No, according to their help centers. Google Cloud does not accept prepaid cards or debit cards that require two-factor authentication. DigitalOcean does not accept virtual, Electron or prepaid cards.

Which hosting provider is the most realistic with an ExCards card?

Of the four we checked, only Hetzner does not rule out virtual or prepaid cards in its help center. It accepts Visa and Mastercard but not wallets such as Apple Pay, so enter the card number directly. Approval is still decided on each charge.

What happens if a hosting bill is not paid?

AWS warns that failed payments can lead to account suspension. Hetzner emails you when an automatic charge fails and lets you retry up to five times. Keep at least one monthly bill plus a margin on the card.

Is identity verification needed to get the card?

Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
