Crypto debit card fees: what spending USDT really costs (with calculator)

A crypto debit card has four costs: the card price, paid once (29 USDT, 35 USDT or 50 USDT); a fee on every top-up (2% on Visa Universe, 3.5% on the other two); a small authorization fee; and up to 2% on purchases in currencies other than USD. There is no monthly fee.

Below you'll find every line item, a calculator and three worked examples. We also look at what "free" crypto cards tend to leave out.

Every fee in one table

Here's the complete list for all three ExCards cards, taken from the public fee disclosure. These are all the fees ExCards publishes. The card issuer reserves the right to add fees, including FX, depending on the card's country of issue and the transaction currency.

One detail catches people out. The top-up fee is taken from what you send, so at 3.5% a 100 USDT top-up leaves 96.50 on the card. To have exactly $800 available, you need to send about 829.02 USDT.

Fee changes are announced in app.excards.io at least 30 days before they take effect.

Calculate your own cost

Enter the card, your top-up amount, how many purchases you make and the share of spending in non-USD currencies. The calculator uses the same fee rules as the table above.

The calculator below estimates your monthly cost: the top-up fee of the chosen card, authorization and 3D Secure fees, the maximum FX markup and, for the first month, the card price. Defaults match worked example 1.

The FX line in the calculator shows the maximum. Your real markup can be lower and is visible on each transaction.

Three worked examples

These are estimates built on the published fees. We assume a 3D Secure check on every Visa purchase, which is the most expensive case, and we gross up each top-up so the balance covers the spending. The mandatory 10 USDT doesn't count, since it stays on the balance. For simplicity, 1 USDT is counted as $1.

1. Freelancer paid in USDT, Visa E-commerce. Twelve subscriptions and services plus everyday purchases add up to 40 transactions and $800 a month, all billed in USD.

2. Small business, 40 payments of about $500. That's $20,000 a month for contractors, SaaS and ad accounts.

On fees alone, Visa costs $18.80 less here. Mastercard Business earns its place once a single payment goes above $20,000, the Visa's per-transaction limit. The Mastercard allows up to $250,000 per transaction.

3. Living in euros, Visa E-commerce. Someone who has relocated spends the equivalent of $1,000 a month across 30 purchases, all charged in EUR.

That gap is the FX markup plus the 3.5% top-up fee charged on it. If a merchant lets you choose the billing currency, it can make a noticeable difference.

Visa's tiered fee or Mastercard's flat $0.50: which is cheaper?

On authorization fees, Visa E-commerce is cheaper per purchase in every normal case. A purchase of $1 or more costs at most $0.03 (the 3D Secure check). A purchase under $1 costs $0.10, plus $0.03 if 3DS runs. Mastercard Business charges $0.50 every time.

Purchases per month Visa, $1 and above (max) Visa, all under $1 (max) Mastercard Business
10$0.30$1.30$5.00
50$1.50$6.50$25.00
100$3.00$13.00$50.00

There's no break-even point on authorizations. The choice comes down to limits. Visa E-commerce allows up to $20,000 per transaction with no daily or monthly cap. Mastercard Business allows $250,000 per transaction, $500,000 a day and $1,000,000 a month.

Visa Universe also charges a flat $0.50 per authorization, like Mastercard Business, but its top-up fee is 2% instead of 3.5%, and it allows $1,000,000 per transaction. It has no offline POS payments.

The Visa's one weak spot is declines. If more than 10% of the card's authorizations are declined, a $0.80 surcharge applies. Frequent failed charges, like retrying a card that keeps getting rejected, are the most direct way to raise your Visa costs. A side-by-side of all three cards is on the card comparison page.

Are "free" crypto cards really free?

Sometimes, but a card with no issuance fee still has to earn money somewhere. The cost usually shows up in one of these places:

ExCards earns from two things: the card price and the top-up fee (2% on Visa Universe, 3.5% on Visa E-commerce and Mastercard Business). We don't claim the card is free. To compare providers on the same questions, see our honest buyer's guide to crypto cards. For the full picture of USDT networks, uses and risks, read the complete guide to USDT cards.

A related point: this is a debit-style card. You spend what you've topped up, and there's no credit line and no cashback. If you're weighing that against crypto rewards credit cards, this breakdown of credit and debit crypto cards explains the trade-offs.

How to keep your costs down

The top-up fee is a percentage, so splitting top-ups doesn't lower it. What you can control:

  1. Top up less often, in larger amounts, sized to the spending you have coming up. The network fee is charged per transfer. Four small sends mean four network fees for the same money.
  2. Pick a network with a lower network fee and check the address network before you send. This comparison of TRC-20, ERC-20 and BEP-20 goes through the differences.
  3. Keep declines low. Keep enough balance for upcoming charges, and don't keep retrying a merchant that rejects the card. Approval is always the merchant's and processor's decision.
  4. Pay in USD when you're given the choice. It avoids the issuer's FX markup of up to 2%.
  5. Keep only near-term spending on the card. The card balance is held by the issuing partner. The rest of your USDT can stay in your own wallet.

Where these fees make sense

For people paid in USDT, people who have relocated without a local bank, and businesses with regular online spending, a card like this can handle most day-to-day payments. That includes subscriptions, services, groceries through Apple Pay or Google Pay, and contractor invoices. The trade-off is about 3.6–3.8% on USD spending in the examples above, plus network fees, and up to about 5.8% when everything is billed in another currency. There's no cash withdrawal, and cards don't work inside sanctioned countries.

If those numbers work for you, here's how to get a card and what it costs to start. Limits and top-up networks are also on the USDT card page.

How we checked this

Every ExCards number on this page was checked against the public fee disclosure as of 15 September 2026. The example arithmetic was recalculated from those fees. For a neutral view of where exchange rates sit on a given day, the ECB publishes daily euro reference rates (for information only, not a transaction rate). The issuer may apply additional fees depending on the card's country and the transaction currency. Updated 10 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a monthly fee on an ExCards crypto debit card?

There is no monthly fee, no inactivity fee and no maintenance fee on any of the three cards. You pay the card price once (29 USDT for Visa Universe, 35 USDT for Visa E-commerce, 50 USDT for Mastercard Business), a fee on each top-up (2% on Visa Universe, 3.5% on the other two) and authorization fees on purchases.

Is the mandatory 10 USDT top-up a fee?

It is not a fee. The 10 USDT first top-up is credited to the card balance and you can spend it like any other money on the card.

Who pays the blockchain network fee when I top up?

You pay it to the network when you send USDT to your top-up address. ExCards does not receive it. The amount depends on the network you choose and how busy it is.

Are crypto card fees refundable?

The card price, the top-up fee and authorization fees are non-refundable. If a transaction is declined, the money returns to the card balance automatically.

What is the FX fee on a USDT card?

When a merchant charges in a currency other than USD, the issuer converts at its reference rate, which may include a markup of up to 2% over the interbank rate. The exact rate is shown on each transaction.

Is this a debit card or a credit card?

It works like a prepaid debit card. You spend the USDT you have topped up, there is no credit line and no cashback or rewards program.

Is identity verification required to get the card?

Yes. KYC is required for every card: a light identity check with your passport, done by the issuing partner. The card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is complete.
