Pay for Airbnb with crypto: a virtual card for your stay
Airbnb takes cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal, not crypto. So you top up a virtual ExCards card with any crypto and book with the card. For a stay Visa Universe is usually cheapest: it costs 29 USDT once, at issuance, with a 2% top-up fee. Airbnb holds the full amount at booking, so top up with a margin.
Airbnb and crypto in short
| What Airbnb accepts | In most countries Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB and debit cards that can be processed as credit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. No crypto. |
| What you need | A card topped up in advance with more than the booking total, a billing address that matches the card, and a phone at hand for 3D Secure. |
| Which card to choose | Visa Universe for the booking. For card payments on the trip itself, Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business. |
| Checked | Airbnb Help Center, 21.10.2026. No test bookings made. |
Which card fits Airbnb
All three cards pay online, pass 3D Secure and work with Apple Pay and Google Pay. A stay is usually one large payment, so the top-up fee matters more than the fee per payment.
| Visa Universe | Visa E-commerce | Mastercard Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card price (one-time, at issuance) | 29 USDT | 35 USDT | 50 USDT |
| Top-up fee | 2% | 3.5% | 3.5% |
| Fee per payment (authorization) | $0.50 flat | Free from $1, plus $0.03 per 3D Secure check | $0.50 flat, 3D Secure included |
| Shop terminals on the trip | No | Yes, via Apple Pay or Google Pay | Yes, via Apple Pay or Google Pay |
| Limit per payment | $1,000,000 | $20,000 | $250,000 |
Booking a stay: Visa Universe. On a large booking the lower top-up fee (2% against 3.5%) saves more than the flat $0.50 per payment costs.
Booking plus spending on the trip: Visa E-commerce. It pays the booking and also works at terminals through Apple Pay or Google Pay, which Visa Universe does not.
Trips for a company: Mastercard Business, if the same card pays for other company spending and offline purchases.
None of this guarantees that a payment is approved. That decision belongs to Airbnb and card processing.
What Airbnb's help center says
We read the Airbnb Help Center on 21.10.2026. We have not made test bookings, so below is what Airbnb states, not our experience.
- Cards, wallets and PayPal, depending on the country. In most countries Airbnb accepts Visa, MasterCard, Amex, JCB and debit cards that can be processed as credit cards, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal; options vary by country or region. Prepaid cards are not on the list, and the Klarna option for US and Canada residents says prepaid cards are not accepted. Source: Payment methods accepted, checked 21.10.2026.
- The full amount is held at booking. Airbnb places a payment hold for the full reservation amount when you book; if the reservation is accepted, it becomes a charge up to 24 hours later. If the request is declined or expires, the release can take up to 7 business days. Source: When there's a payment hold or authorization on your payment method, checked 21.10.2026.
- A new card may be verified with two small holds. Airbnb can send 2 temporary authorizations of $1.99 or less, and you enter those amounts on Airbnb to confirm the card. They are released afterwards, which can take up to 7 business days. Source: Verify your card using temporary authorizations, checked 21.10.2026.
- 3D Secure appears as "Confirm your card". After you select Confirm and pay, the card issuer may ask for confirmation; if you close it or it fails, the payment fails. Source: Authenticate your credit or debit card, checked 21.10.2026.
- Usual reasons for a failed payment. Airbnb lists an expired card, a billing address or phone number that doesn't match the card, a method not accepted in your area, a daily limit, insufficient funds and fraud prevention. Source: Something went wrong with your payment, checked 21.10.2026.
In public Reddit threads people ask whether Airbnb takes crypto at all and look for workarounds, such as Airbnb gift cards bought for bitcoin from third-party shops. We have not checked that route. With a card, plan the balance with the hold in mind and treat the first small booking as a test.
How to pay for Airbnb, step by step
- Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
- Top up with any crypto. This is a separate step after the card is issued: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the top-up fee of your card is taken from each top-up. Put on the card more than the booking total.
- Add the card to Airbnb. At checkout or in Payments in your account, enter the card number, expiry date, security code and the billing address you actually live at. If Airbnb asks for two small amounts, find them among the card's pending payments and enter them; if you can't see them, write to @excards_bot.
- Book and confirm. Select Confirm and pay. When the Confirm your card window opens, complete it right away.
Common declines and what to do
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Booking declined right away | Balance below the total: Airbnb holds the full amount at once | Top up with a margin and retry once |
| Declined after you entered the card | Billing address, ZIP code or phone number doesn't match the card | Correct the details and retry |
| Money is gone but there is no booking | A hold from a declined or expired request | Wait: Airbnb says the release can take up to 7 business days |
| Payment fails after Confirm and pay | The Confirm your card step was closed or timed out | Retry and complete the confirmation without closing the window |
| The card worked before, now it is refused | Airbnb's fraud prevention or card processing stopped accepting it | Stop retrying, try another of the three cards or write to @excards_bot |
| Long stay is declined | Above the per-payment limit: $20,000 on Visa E-commerce | Pay with Visa Universe or Mastercard Business |
Do not press "Confirm and pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. If Airbnb charges in a currency other than USD, the card issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where cards are available at all is on the geo restrictions page, and the payment calculator shows what a booking costs on each card.
Frequently asked questions
Can you pay Airbnb with crypto?
Not directly. Airbnb's list of payment methods has cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and some local options, but no crypto. You top up an ExCards card with any crypto and book with the card. Whether a booking goes through is decided by Airbnb and card processing, so no card can promise it.
Does Airbnb take prepaid cards?
Airbnb's help lists Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB and debit cards that can be processed as credit cards. It does not list prepaid cards for regular bookings, and its Klarna option says prepaid cards are not accepted. An ExCards card spends a balance you topped up in advance; how Airbnb classifies it, we don't know, so test with a small booking first.
Why does Airbnb hold money on my card?
For most bookings Airbnb places a hold for the full amount when you book, and it turns into a charge up to 24 hours later. If the request is declined or expires, the hold is released, which can take up to 7 business days. Keep this in mind when you top up the card.
Why was my card declined on Airbnb?
Airbnb names the usual reasons: an expired card, a billing address or phone number that doesn't match the card, a method not accepted in your area, a limit, too little balance, or fraud prevention. Check the details, top up with a margin and retry once.
Which ExCards card is best for Airbnb?
For a booking itself Visa Universe is usually cheapest: its top-up fee is 2% and the card costs 29 USDT once. Universe does not pay at shop terminals, so for spending on the trip take Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business.
Can I pay Airbnb from a crypto wallet?
A wallet can't be added to Airbnb, but it can fund a card. Send coins from your wallet to the card's deposit address, the balance is credited in USDT, and you pay Airbnb with the card.
Is identity verification needed to get the card?
Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
