Crypto card for ChatGPT: pay ChatGPT Plus and the OpenAI API
ChatGPT is paid by card, so you top up a virtual ExCards Visa or Mastercard with any crypto and add it in Settings, Billing on chatgpt.com. For Plus or Pro, Visa E-commerce usually fits: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee. One caveat: OpenAI does not accept prepaid cards for API credits, so the API may refuse a top-up card.
Which card fits ChatGPT
All three cards pay online, pass 3D Secure and work with Apple Pay and Google Pay. For a ChatGPT subscription the difference is the fee on each payment and each top-up.
| Visa Universe | Visa E-commerce | Mastercard Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card price (one-time, at issuance) | 29 USDT | 35 USDT | 50 USDT |
| Top-up fee | 2% | 3.5% | 3.5% |
| Fee per payment (authorization) | $0.50 flat | Free from $1, plus $0.03 per 3D Secure check | $0.50 flat, 3D Secure included |
| Online payments and 3D Secure | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Limit per payment | $1,000,000 | $20,000 | $250,000 |
ChatGPT Plus or Pro on the web: Visa E-commerce. A monthly charge above $1 costs only the 3D Secure check, and there is no daily or monthly cap.
Several subscriptions plus other spending: Visa Universe, if you top up larger amounts and want the lowest top-up fee, 2%.
API credits: read the next section first. OpenAI's rule on prepaid cards matters more here than the choice of card.
None of this guarantees approval. The decision belongs to OpenAI's payment checks and card processing.
What OpenAI's help center says
We read OpenAI's official help pages on 10.10.2026. We have not made test payments to OpenAI, so this is what OpenAI states, not our experience.
- Prepaid cards and API credits. Prepaid cards cannot be used to purchase API credits; only standard credit or debit cards are supported. An ExCards card spends a balance you top up in advance, and we cannot confirm how OpenAI classifies it, so plan for the API possibly refusing it. Source: Why was my credit card declined?, checked 10.10.2026.
- Country of the user and of the card. Purchases are available only in supported countries, and the card must be issued in a supported region. Both you and the card issuer must be in a supported country. Sources: the same article and Why did my ChatGPT Plus or Pro renewal fail?, checked 10.10.2026.
- 3D Secure. Complete any 3D Secure prompt: allow pop-ups and redirects, turn off ad blockers, do not close or refresh the checkout; if it keeps failing, try an incognito window or another browser. Source: Why was my credit card declined?, checked 10.10.2026.
- Billing details. Card number, expiry date, CVC and billing address, including the postal code, must be correct. Same source, checked 10.10.2026.
- Two separate billing systems. ChatGPT is billed in Settings, Billing on chatgpt.com; the API has its own billing settings on platform.openai.com. ChatGPT can also be billed through the App Store or Google Play. Source: Managing billing for ChatGPT and the API platform, checked 10.10.2026.
- API credits are prepaid. The minimum purchase is $5, auto-reload is on by default during setup, and you set the threshold. Source: Setting up and managing prepaid API billing, checked 10.10.2026.
How to pay for ChatGPT, step by step
- Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
- Top up with any crypto. A separate step after issuance: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the card's top-up fee is taken from each top-up. Keep a little more on the card than the plan costs.
- Add the card to ChatGPT. Sign in on chatgpt.com, open Settings, then Billing, choose the plan or update the payment method, and enter the card number, expiry date, CVC and your real billing address with postal code.
- Confirm the payment. If a 3D Secure window opens, complete it without closing or refreshing the page. Renewals then charge the same card while there is money on it.
Paying through the iPhone or Android app goes through the App Store or Google Play instead; see the pages on the App Store and Google Play.
Common declines and what to do
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined on the first payment | Balance below the charge: on Visa Universe and Mastercard Business each payment also costs $0.50 | Top up with a margin and try once more |
| "3D Secure attempt failed" or "authentication required" | The confirmation was blocked by a pop-up blocker or the page was refreshed | Allow pop-ups, turn off ad blockers, retry in an incognito window |
| Declined with correct card details | Billing address or postal code does not match, or the country is not supported | Enter your real address and check supported countries |
| API credit purchase declined | OpenAI does not accept prepaid cards for API credits | Do not retry; this rule cannot be bypassed with card settings |
| Renewal failed | Not enough on the card at renewal time | Top up, then retry in Settings, Billing |
| Refused whatever you do | OpenAI's checks did not accept this card | Stop retrying, try another of the three cards or write to @excards_bot |
Do not press "pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. If the charge is in a currency other than USD, the issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where the cards can be used is on the geo restrictions page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for ChatGPT Plus with a crypto card?
OpenAI takes a card, not crypto, so you top up an ExCards card with any crypto and pay ChatGPT with it. OpenAI's help says that both you and the card issuer must be in a supported country. Whether a payment is approved is decided by OpenAI's payment checks and card processing, so no card can promise it.
Can I buy OpenAI API credits with an ExCards card?
OpenAI states that prepaid cards cannot be used to purchase API credits and that only standard credit or debit cards are supported. An ExCards card spends a balance you top up in advance. We cannot tell you in advance how OpenAI classifies it, so if an API credit purchase is declined, this rule is the likely reason and no card setting will get around it.
Which ExCards card is best for ChatGPT Plus?
Visa E-commerce usually fits a monthly subscription: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee, only $0.03 for a 3D Secure check, and the card has no daily or monthly cap. On Visa Universe and Mastercard Business each payment costs a flat $0.50.
Why did the 3D Secure check fail on ChatGPT?
OpenAI recommends allowing pop-ups and redirects, turning off ad blockers, and completing the confirmation without closing or refreshing the checkout. If it still fails, try an incognito window or another browser. All ExCards authorizations go through 3D Secure 2.
My ChatGPT renewal failed. What should I do?
Top up the card with a margin, check the card details and billing address in Settings, Billing on chatgpt.com, and retry. OpenAI also lists clearing the browser cache and checking that you and the card issuer are in a supported country.
Is identity verification needed to get the card?
Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
