Crypto card for Booking.com and Airbnb
Booking.com and Airbnb take cards, not crypto, so the route is a virtual ExCards Visa or Mastercard topped up with any crypto. Airbnb usually charges the card once the stay is confirmed; on Booking.com the property usually charges it, often at check-in. Keep a margin for holds. To pay at the hotel itself you need Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business, since Visa Universe does not pay at a terminal.
Which card fits a trip
All three cards pay online and pass 3D Secure. For travel two more things matter: whether the card can pay at a terminal at the hotel, and how large a single payment it allows.
| Visa Universe | Visa E-commerce | Mastercard Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card price (one-time, at issuance) | 29 USDT | 35 USDT | 50 USDT |
| Top-up fee | 2% | 3.5% | 3.5% |
| Fee per payment (authorization) | $0.50 flat | Free from $1, plus $0.03 per 3D Secure check | $0.50 flat, 3D Secure included |
| Online payments and 3D Secure | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Paying at a terminal with Apple Pay or Google Pay | No | Yes | Yes |
| Limit per payment | $1,000,000 | $20,000 | $250,000 |
Airbnb, paid in full online: Visa Universe. A stay is one larger payment, so the lower top-up fee (2% against 3.5%) saves more than the flat $0.50 costs. Universe cannot pay at a terminal, so take a second card for the trip itself.
Booking.com with payment at the property: Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business. Of the three cards, they are the ones that pay at a contactless terminal through Apple Pay or Google Pay, which is how a virtual card pays in person; Visa Universe does not.
An expensive trip: check the per-payment limit. Visa E-commerce stops at $20,000 per payment; Visa Universe and Mastercard Business allow much more.
All ExCards cards are virtual today, so there is no plastic card to hand over at reception. If a hotel insists on a physical card in the guest's name or does not take phone payments, you need another way to pay. Ask the property before you travel. None of this guarantees that a payment is approved: that is decided by the platform, the property and card processing.
What Booking.com and Airbnb say
We read the official help pages of Booking.com and Airbnb on 14.10.2026. We have not made test bookings, so below is what the platforms state, not our experience.
- On Booking.com the property usually charges. Generally the property charges your card, usually at check-in or check-out. If Booking.com handles the payment, the confirmation says so, and some properties ask for a prepayment or deposit at booking. Source: Booking.com Customer Service FAQ, checked 14.10.2026.
- Pre-authorization blocks money. A pre-authorization is a validity check that temporarily blocks roughly the cost of the reservation. How long it takes to be released depends on the property and your card provider. Without a prepayment policy, a property may also take a test payment that is returned. Source: Booking.com Customer Service FAQ, checked 14.10.2026.
- Each hotel picks its cards. Mastercard, Visa, American Express and Diners Club work on the Booking.com website, but a hotel may not accept all of them: look for "Accepted credit cards" in the hotel policies. Booking.com also says hotels generally cannot accept a debit card to guarantee a booking, with exceptions shown during booking. How a particular hotel classifies an ExCards card, we do not know. Source: Booking.com credit card FAQ, checked 14.10.2026.
- The cardholder's name matters. You can book with someone else's card only with their permission, and Booking.com asks you to write the cardholder's name and that permission in Special requests. At the hotel you can usually pay for the stay with a different card or in cash, if the hotel accepts it. Source: Booking.com credit card FAQ, checked 14.10.2026.
- Airbnb cards. In most countries Airbnb accepts major credit cards and debit cards that can be processed as credit cards, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal. For paying over time with Klarna, prepaid cards are not accepted. Source: Payment methods accepted, checked 14.10.2026.
- Airbnb holds the full amount. At booking Airbnb places a hold for the full reservation amount; once the reservation is accepted it turns into a charge up to 24 hours later. If a request is declined or expires, the release can take up to 7 business days to show. Sources: When there's a payment hold or authorization and When you'll pay for your reservation, checked 14.10.2026.
- Airbnb may verify a new card. It can send 2 temporary authorizations of $1.99 or less; you find the amounts in your card account and enter them on Airbnb. Source: Verify your card using temporary authorizations, checked 14.10.2026.
- 3D Secure on Airbnb. If the card issuer asks for authentication, Airbnb shows a Confirm your card screen; if you fail or close it, the payment fails. Source: Authenticate your credit or debit card, checked 14.10.2026.
How to pay for a stay, step by step
- Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
- Top up with any crypto. This is a separate step after the card is issued: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the top-up fee of your card is taken from each top-up. Put on the card more than the stay costs: holds block roughly the full amount, and a deposit may come on top.
- Book. On Airbnb add the card at checkout, complete Confirm your card if it appears, and enter the two small amounts if Airbnb asks to verify the card. On Booking.com enter the card when booking, and first read the property's payment policy and its list of accepted cards. Enter the billing address you actually live at.
- Pay at the property. If the hotel charges on arrival, pay with Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business through Apple Pay or Google Pay at a contactless terminal, or with another method the hotel accepts. Check with the property in advance that it takes phone payments.
Common declines and what to do
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined at booking | Balance below the hold: it covers roughly the full stay, and on Visa Universe and Mastercard Business each payment also costs $0.50 | Top up with a margin and try once more |
| "If you fail the security check your transaction will be declined" | The 3D Secure check on Airbnb was not finished | Retry and complete Confirm your card without closing it |
| "Postal code must match" or "Transaction not allowed" | Address or card details differ from what the card account holds | Enter the details exactly as in your card account |
| "Payment Error: Amount is too large" | Above the per-payment limit: $20,000 on Visa E-commerce | Pay with Visa Universe or Mastercard Business |
| "This credit card can't be added right now" | Airbnb noticed unusual activity on the account | Wait up to 24 hours before trying again |
| The hotel cannot charge the card at check-in | The hotel wants a physical card, does not take this card type, or the card is Visa Universe, which cannot pay at a terminal | Pay by phone with Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business, or another method the hotel accepts |
| Money still blocked after a cancellation | The hold has not been released yet | On Airbnb allow up to 7 business days; on Booking.com ask the property, or write to @excards_bot |
Do not press "pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. Hotels and hosts often charge in local currency: the issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where cards are available at all is on the geo restrictions page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Booking.com or Airbnb with crypto?
Not directly: both charge a card. You top up an ExCards card with crypto and pay with the card. Airbnb lists major credit cards and debit cards that can be processed as credit cards; on Booking.com each property decides which cards it accepts. Whether a particular payment goes through is decided by the platform, the property and card processing, so no card can promise it.
Which ExCards card is best for travel?
For a stay paid in full online, Visa Universe usually costs least thanks to its 2% top-up fee. If you will pay at the hotel or in shops during the trip, take Visa E-commerce or Mastercard Business: both can pay at a contactless terminal through Apple Pay or Google Pay, and Visa Universe cannot.
Will a hotel accept a virtual card at check-in?
It depends on the hotel. ExCards cards are virtual, so you cannot hand over a plastic card. Visa E-commerce and Mastercard Business can pay at a contactless terminal through Apple Pay or Google Pay if the hotel accepts that. Some hotels want a physical card in the guest's name, so ask the property before you travel and keep another way to pay.
Why is money blocked on my card after booking?
That is a hold, not a final charge. Airbnb holds the full reservation amount and turns it into a charge once the booking is accepted. On Booking.com a property may pre-authorize roughly the cost of the stay to check the card. Released holds can take up to 7 business days to show on Airbnb; on Booking.com it depends on the property and the card provider.
Airbnb asks me to verify my card with two small amounts. What do I do?
Airbnb may send 2 temporary authorizations of $1.99 or less to the card. Find the two amounts among the recent payments on your card and enter them on Airbnb. Keep a few dollars on the card for this check.
Is identity verification needed to get the card?
Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
