Crypto card for Perplexity: pay Perplexity Pro and API credits
Perplexity takes cards, not crypto, so the route is a virtual ExCards Visa or Mastercard that you top up with any crypto. For Perplexity Pro, Visa E-commerce usually fits: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee. On the web you pay on a Stripe checkout page; API credits are bought separately in the API Console. Confirm 3D Secure when asked.
Which card fits Perplexity
All three cards pay online, pass 3D Secure and work with Apple Pay and Google Pay, which Perplexity also accepts. For Perplexity the difference is in the fee on each payment and on each top-up.
| Visa Universe | Visa E-commerce | Mastercard Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card price (one-time, at issuance) | 29 USDT | 35 USDT | 50 USDT |
| Top-up fee | 2% | 3.5% | 3.5% |
| Fee per payment (authorization) | $0.50 flat | Free from $1, plus $0.03 per 3D Secure check | $0.50 flat, 3D Secure included |
| Online payments and 3D Secure | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Limit per payment | $1,000,000 | $20,000 | $250,000 |
Perplexity Pro: Visa E-commerce. A monthly charge above $1 costs only the 3D Secure check, and the card has no daily or monthly cap.
API credits with Automatic Top Up: also Visa E-commerce. Refills happen whenever the balance drops below $2, so there are many small payments, and on Visa Universe each one would cost $0.50.
Large API credit purchases made by hand: Visa Universe. On a few hundred dollars a month the lower top-up fee (2% against 3.5%) outweighs the flat fee per payment.
None of this guarantees that a payment is approved. That decision belongs to Perplexity's payment checks and card processing.
What Perplexity's help center says
We read Perplexity's official help pages on 14.10.2026. We have not made test payments to Perplexity, so below is what Perplexity states, not our experience.
- Accepted methods. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard and AMEX), Cash App, Google Pay and Apple Pay, and ACH transfer. Prepaid cards are not mentioned either way. An ExCards card spends the balance you topped up in advance. Source: Billing FAQ for Pro Plan Subscribers, checked 14.10.2026.
- Checkout on the web is Stripe. To upgrade, you open account settings, find the Subscription section, click Upgrade Plan and are sent to a Stripe payments page to enter your details. Source: Billing FAQ for Pro Plan Subscribers, checked 14.10.2026.
- Trials need a card too. A valid credit or debit card is required for promotional and trial plans, nothing is charged during the trial, and the plan renews at the standard rate unless you cancel. If Perplexity asks an existing trial user for a card and none is added within 7 days, the account goes back to the free version. Source: Billing FAQ for Pro Plan Subscribers, checked 14.10.2026.
- App store subscriptions live in the store. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, the payment method is managed there. Updating a web plan through a store creates a new, separate subscription. Source: Billing FAQ for Pro Plan Subscribers, checked 14.10.2026.
- The API is pay-as-you-go credits. You add a payment method in the API Console under Billing, buy credits with Buy more credits and can switch on Automatic Top Up, which refills the balance when it drops below $2. A Pro subscription is not required, and unused credits can be refunded if you report it within 14 days. Source: API Payment and billing, checked 14.10.2026.
- No renewal, no Pro. If the subscription is not renewed, the account returns to the free version after the current billing cycle ends; pausing is not available. Source: Billing FAQ for Pro Plan Subscribers, checked 14.10.2026.
How to pay for Perplexity, step by step
- Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
- Top up with any crypto. This is a separate step after the card is issued: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the top-up fee of your card is taken from each top-up. Put on the card a little more than the plan or the credit pack you are buying.
- Add the card to Perplexity. For Pro: on perplexity.ai open account settings, Subscription, Upgrade Plan, and enter the card on the Stripe page. For the API: in the API Console open Billing, Add payment method, then Buy more credits. Enter the billing address you actually live at.
- Confirm the payment. If a 3D Secure window opens, complete it right away. After that, renewals and top-ups charge the same card while there is money on it.
Subscribing inside the iPhone or Android app goes through your store account instead; see our App Store and Google Play pages.
Common declines and what to do
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined on the Stripe page | Balance below the charge: on Visa Universe and Mastercard Business each payment also costs $0.50 | Top up with a margin and try once more |
| Payment stuck, then declined | The 3D Secure check was not finished or timed out | Retry and complete the confirmation without closing the window |
| Charged twice for Pro | The card was changed through a store for a web subscription, which creates a second plan | Change the card only on perplexity.ai and cancel the extra plan in the store |
| Trial ended up on the free version | No card was added within 7 days of Perplexity's request | Add the card; access returns, missed days do not |
| Automatic Top Up stopped | Card balance below the refill amount, or an unanswered 3D Secure check | Keep more than one refill on the card |
| The card is refused whatever you do | Perplexity's checks did not accept this card | Stop retrying, try another of the three cards or write to @excards_bot |
Do not press "pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. If the merchant charges in a currency other than USD, the issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where cards are available at all is on the geo restrictions page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Perplexity with a crypto card?
Perplexity charges a card or a wallet like Apple Pay, not crypto, so you top up an ExCards card with crypto and pay Perplexity with the card. Perplexity lists Visa, Mastercard and AMEX credit and debit cards among accepted methods. Whether a particular payment goes through is decided by Perplexity and card processing, so no card can promise it.
Which ExCards card fits Perplexity Pro?
For a monthly plan, Visa E-commerce usually fits best: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee, only $0.03 for a 3D Secure check, and the card has no daily or monthly cap.
Do I need Perplexity Pro to use the API?
No. Perplexity says the API is a separate service: you buy API credits in the API Console without a subscription. API credits are also separate from the credits used inside Perplexity itself.
Why does Automatic Top Up keep charging small amounts?
Automatic Top Up refills API credits when the balance drops below $2, so every refill is a new card payment. On Visa E-commerce payments from $1 have no authorization fee, while Visa Universe charges $0.50 on each one. Keep more on the card than one refill.
I subscribed in the iPhone app. Where do I change the card?
In the App Store, not on the Perplexity website. Perplexity warns that updating payment details through the App Store or Google Play for a web subscription creates a new, separate subscription, so change a web plan only on perplexity.ai.
Is identity verification needed to get the card?
Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
