Crypto card for Steam, PlayStation Store and Xbox
Steam, PlayStation Store and the Microsoft Store on Xbox charge a card, not a crypto wallet, so the route is a virtual ExCards Visa or Mastercard that you top up with any crypto. For games, add-ons and console subscriptions, Visa E-commerce usually fits: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee. Add the card in the store's payment settings and confirm 3D Secure.
Which card fits game stores
All three cards pay online, pass 3D Secure and work with Apple Pay and Google Pay. Game purchases are usually small and frequent, so what matters most is the fee on each payment and on each top-up.
| Visa Universe | Visa E-commerce | Mastercard Business | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card price (one-time, at issuance) | 29 USDT | 35 USDT | 50 USDT |
| Top-up fee | 2% | 3.5% | 3.5% |
| Fee per payment (authorization) | $0.50 flat | Free from $1, plus $0.03 per 3D Secure check | $0.50 flat, 3D Secure included |
| Online payments and 3D Secure | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Limit per payment | $1,000,000 | $20,000 | $250,000 |
Games, add-ons and a console subscription: Visa E-commerce. Every purchase above $1 costs only the 3D Secure check, and the card has no daily or monthly cap, which helps during a seasonal sale when you buy several games in one evening.
Large wallet top-ups: Visa Universe. If you load your Steam Wallet or PlayStation wallet with a bigger sum in one go, the lower top-up fee (2% against 3.5%) outweighs the flat $0.50 per payment.
A Mastercard next to a Visa: Mastercard Business, if you also pay company expenses and want cards on two networks. PlayStation Store, for example, lists both Visa and Mastercard among accepted cards.
None of this guarantees that a payment is approved. That decision belongs to the store's payment checks and card processing.
What Steam, PlayStation and Microsoft say
We read the official pages of Valve, Sony and Microsoft on 14.10.2026. We have not made test payments in these stores, so below is what the stores state, not our experience. Steam shows its detailed payment troubleshooting only after you sign in, so for Steam we rely on the public Subscriber Agreement and refund policy.
- Steam Wallet takes cards. Funds can be added to the Steam Wallet by credit card, prepaid card, promotional code or any other payment method Steam accepts. By entering card details you confirm that you are the authorized user of the card. Source: Steam Subscriber Agreement, section 3, checked 14.10.2026.
- Steam Wallet has a daily ceiling. Within any 24 hours, the amount stored in the wallet plus the amount spent from it may not exceed US$2,000 or the local equivalent. Deposits above that may not be credited until activity drops below the threshold. Source: Steam Subscriber Agreement, checked 14.10.2026.
- Steam refunds go back the same way. A game can be refunded if requested within two weeks of purchase with less than two hours played. The money returns to the original payment method or to the Steam Wallet, and if Steam cannot refund to the original method, the wallet is credited. Source: Steam Refunds, checked 14.10.2026.
- PlayStation Store cards. The US page lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover, plus PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay and Cash App Pay. Up to three cards can be saved to an account, and a card can also top up the PlayStation wallet. Source: Payment methods accepted on PlayStation Store, checked 14.10.2026.
- PlayStation and the card's country. If a card is registered to an address in a country other than your PlayStation Store region, it may not link. Too many card updates in a short time block payment changes for 24 hours, and each new attempt restarts the block. Source: Problems adding credit or debit card information to PlayStation Store, checked 14.10.2026.
- 3D Secure on a console. Sony says 3D Secure checks may fail on PS4 and PS5 consoles and suggests buying in PlayStation Store through a web browser, then downloading on the console. Source: Problems with 3DS2 payment authentication on PlayStation Store, checked 14.10.2026.
- Microsoft account and region. A card for Microsoft Store and Xbox is added in your Microsoft account under Payment & billing, Payment options, Add a new payment method. Source: Update your payment method, checked 14.10.2026. Microsoft recommends changing the account region only if you are moving for a long time: items from one region, including Xbox Game Pass, games and the account balance, might not work in another, and the balance does not move with you. Source: Change your country or region in Microsoft Store, checked 14.10.2026.
- Xbox subscription on a failing card. After several declines the Xbox subscription stops working until the card is updated or another payment method is added, and other Microsoft services on the same card may be affected. Some card issuers also ask you to verify the payment. Sources: Why was the payment for my Xbox subscription declined and Troubleshoot payment option issues, checked 14.10.2026.
We do not advise changing the region of a Steam, PlayStation or Microsoft account to make a card work. The stores tie prices and content to the region, and a change can cost you access to what you already bought.
How to pay for games, step by step
- Issue the card. Sign up at app.excards.io, pass the light passport check and choose a card. The card price is paid once, at issuance. The virtual card is ready within 10 minutes after verification.
- Top up with any crypto. This is a separate step after the card is issued: send USDT, BTC, ETH or another supported coin to your deposit address. The first top-up is at least 10 USDT, and the top-up fee of your card is taken from each top-up. Put on the card a little more than the game, the wallet top-up or the subscription you are buying.
- Add the card to the store. Steam: choose the card at checkout, or first add funds to your Steam Wallet with it and pay from the wallet. PlayStation: in a browser open Account Management, then Payment Method, Add Payment Method, Add a Credit/Debit Card, and enter the billing address. Xbox: on the Payment options page of your Microsoft account choose Add a new payment method; a subscription card is changed on the Services & subscriptions page. Enter the address you actually live at.
- Confirm the payment. If a 3D Secure window opens, complete it right away. If the check keeps failing on a PlayStation console, buy the game in PlayStation Store in a browser and download it on the console.
Common declines and what to do
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Card declined on the first purchase | Balance below the charge: on Visa Universe and Mastercard Business each payment also costs $0.50 | Top up with a margin and try once more |
| Payment on a PS4 or PS5 hangs, then fails | The 3D Secure check did not complete on the console | Buy in PlayStation Store through a browser, then download on the console |
| PlayStation will not link the card | The card's address is in a different country from your store region, or the details do not match | Check the details; use another payment method Sony lists, not a region change |
| "Updated too often within a short amount of time" | PlayStation blocked payment changes for 24 hours | Wait 24 hours without new attempts, each one restarts the block |
| Xbox subscription stopped after a renewal | The card was declined several times, usually because the balance ran out | Top up and update the card on Services & subscriptions |
| Steam Wallet top-up not credited | More than US$2,000 stored and spent within 24 hours | Wait until your activity drops below Steam's limit |
| The card is refused whatever you do | The store's checks did not accept this card | Stop retrying, try another of the three cards or write to @excards_bot |
Do not press "pay" over and over. On Visa E-commerce a $0.80 surcharge applies if more than 10% of the card's payments are declined. If the store charges in a currency other than USD, the issuer converts at its rate, which can include a markup of up to 2%. Where cards are available at all is on the geo restrictions page.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Steam with crypto?
Not directly: Steam charges a card or your Steam Wallet. You top up an ExCards card with crypto and pay with the card, or add funds to the Steam Wallet with it. Valve's Subscriber Agreement names credit and prepaid cards among the ways to fund the wallet. Whether a particular payment goes through is decided by Steam's checks and card processing, so no card can promise it.
Which ExCards card is best for games?
For regular purchases Visa E-commerce usually fits best: payments from $1 carry no authorization fee, only $0.03 for a 3D Secure check, and there is no daily or monthly cap. Visa Universe has the lowest top-up fee, 2%, which pays off on large wallet top-ups.
Why does PlayStation Store not accept my card?
Sony names a few reasons: card details that do not match, online payments switched off for the card, and a card registered in a country other than your PlayStation Store region. After too many attempts PlayStation also blocks payment changes for 24 hours. Check the details, wait out the block and use another payment method Sony lists if the card still will not link.
My payment fails on the console. What can I do?
Sony says 3D Secure checks may fail on PS4 and PS5 consoles. Buy the game or subscription in PlayStation Store through a web browser on a computer or phone, complete 3D Secure there and download the content on the console.
Should I change my store region so the card works?
No. Steam, PlayStation and Microsoft tie prices and content to the account region, and Microsoft warns that items bought in one region might not work in another. Use the card in the region you actually live in, and if the store refuses it, choose another payment method the store offers.
Is identity verification needed to get the card?
Yes. KYC is required for every ExCards card: a light passport check by the card issuer partner plus sanctions screening. The virtual card is issued within 10 minutes after verification is approved.
